The Postgraduate and Research Department of Commerce promotes a vibrant research culture across UG, PG, and Ph.D. levels, encouraging students and scholars to examine real-life economic, social, environmental, and business issues through field-based and action-oriented studies. Research in the department is not limited to theoretical enquiry; it is directed towards understanding local challenges, evaluating community needs, analysing policy impact, and suggesting practical solutions.

At the undergraduate level, students are encouraged to undertake small research projects and surveys that help them connect classroom learning with society and industry. These projects focus on practical and locally relevant themes such as green transportation, agriculture as a career option, perception on waste management, KSRTC budget tourism, consumer awareness, entrepreneurship, and the impact of GST on small businesses.

At the postgraduate and Ph.D. levels, the department promotes more advanced, systematic, and analytical research in areas such as behavioral finance, ESG, sustainable finance, green economy, entrepreneurship, taxation, public policy, financial behaviour, corporate governance, and responsible business practices. PG dissertations and doctoral research encourage deeper investigation using data collection, statistical analysis, interpretation, and evidence-based conclusions.

The department gives special emphasis to research that addresses real issues and generates meaningful insights for business, society, and policy. Through these studies, students and scholars are trained to think critically, work with evidence, and contribute meaningfully to sustainable development, enterprise growth, financial awareness, and inclusive economic progress.

It is a great honour and a profound responsibility to lead the Postgraduate and Research Department of Commerce, a department with a proud legacy of academic excellence, professional growth, and student success. Over the years, the department has grown into one of the most vibrant academic spaces of the college, known for its large student strength, diverse and accomplished alumni network, consistently high admission demand, and commendably low dropout rate.

The Department of Commerce has been shaped by the dedication of eminent teachers who served here in the past. Today, this legacy is carried forward by a committed and dynamic team of eight faculty members who work together with enthusiasm, mutual support, and a shared vision to take the department to greater heights. We are also privileged to receive the continued support and goodwill of our retired faculty members, whose affection for the department remains a source of strength. Their generous contribution of scholarships for our students stands as a meaningful expression of their trust, care, and lasting bond with the department.

The department continues to strengthen its academic and research profile. Six out of the eight faculty members have been awarded Ph.D. degrees, and two faculty members serve as recognised research guides, reflecting our commitment to scholarship, research, and academic advancement. As a recognised research department, we are steadily building a vibrant research culture that encourages meaningful inquiry among both teachers and students.

In tune with the changing demands of commerce education and the global professional landscape, the department has entered into academic and professional collaborations with International Skill Development Corporation Limited, UK, Miles Education, and FinX Academy, formerly BSE Academy. These partnerships enable our students to access globally recognised professional qualifications such as ACCA and US CMA, along with industry-relevant skill enhancement programmes. These initiatives reflect our commitment to bridging classroom learning with professional competence and global career opportunities.

In line with changing career aspirations and industry expectations, the undergraduate programme has also been restructured as the Four-Year B.Com. (Hons) Programme, offering students a strong foundation in accounting, taxation, finance, business analytics, research, and professional practice. Our faculty members constantly strive to update their knowledge, adopt effective teaching practices, encourage research, and provide meaningful guidance to students.

We believe that education is not limited to classrooms alone. It is about nurturing confidence, ethical values, leadership, professional competence, and a positive outlook towards life. As a department, our sincere wish is that every student who passes through our classrooms will remember this place with pride and affection.

We hope the Department of Commerce will remain a perennial source of encouragement, confidence, and positivity in the lives of our students.

We are, and will always be, there for our students.

Research Highlights

The department’s research initiatives focus on real issues, real people, and practical outcomes. Students and scholars undertake projects that address socially relevant and locally meaningful themes, making research a tool for awareness, analysis, and action. Key research highlights include studies on green transportation and sustainable mobility examining how eco-friendly travel choices can reduce environmental impact. Research on agriculture as a career option explores youth attitudes towards farming, agribusiness, organic agriculture, and rural entrepreneurship. Projects on waste management perception analyse public awareness, household practices, and community participation in responsible waste disposal. The department also encourages research on emerging service and tourism models such as KSRTC budget tourism, studying its relevance for affordable travel, local economic development, and public-sector innovation. In the area of taxation and business policy, studies on the impact of GST on small businesses help students understand the practical challenges faced by traders, entrepreneurs, and local enterprises. By integrating UG projects, PG dissertations, and Ph.D. research, the department builds a strong foundation for impactful, action-oriented, and socially responsible research. Its research culture reflects a commitment to sustainability, entrepreneurship, green economy, public policy awareness, and inclusive economic progress.
