Postgraduate and Research Department of Commerce

Established in 1965, the Department of Commerce embarked on a journey that has evolved over the years. In 1981, it ascended to the status of a Postgraduate Department of Commerce, a milestone later upgraded to the Postgraduate and Research Department of Commerce in 2022. Presently, the department proudly offers comprehensive programs including B.Com. Finance and Taxation, M.Com. Finance and Taxation, and a Ph.D. program in the aided stream.

The Postgraduate and Research Department of Commerce, with a rich legacy spanning 59 years, is evolving into a globally recognized hub for Commerce and Management studies through recent international collaborations. In a significant partnership, the department has signed an MOU with the International Skill Development Corporation Limited, UK, to offer the globally acclaimed ACCA and CMA qualifications to B.Com. students. The undergraduate programme, B.

Com Computer (Model I), has transformed into B.Com Finance and Taxation (Model 1), aligning with evolving student career aspirations.

In response to industry demands, we have incorporated three value-added courses—Public Speaking and Presentation Skills and Campus to Corporate—tailored for first-year, second-year, and third-year B.Com. students. These initiatives showcase our dedication to providing a well-rounded and industry-relevant education, preparing our students for successful careers in the dynamic world of commerce.

Our students now excel in professional courses such as M.B.A., C.A., ICWA, CMA, and ACCA. A good number of postgraduate students consistently clear the NET and JRF exams each year. They have secured coveted placements in esteemed organizations like South Indian Bank, Federal Bank, EY, KPMG, ESAF, and Cholamandalam Investment and Finance Company, among others. Witnessing the remarkable academic and career progression of our students fills us with immense pride.

To groom future corporate heads, business leaders and academicians with a global perspective, equipped with entrepreneurial acumen, research orientation and unwavering ethical integrity to propel inclusive economics growth and social progress.

Provide comprehensive education and research in commerce and management while fostering entrepreneurial thinking, innovation, and ethical values with a focus on sustainability and corporate governance.

HOD’s Desk

It is indeed a great honour and a mighty responsibility to be designated as the team leader of the Postgraduate Department of Commerce having a grand legacy of 55 years. A department with the largest student strength, a department with one of the most heterogeneous alumni members, a department with one of the highest cut-off marks for admissions, a department with the least number of drop outs, the Postgraduate Department of Commerce has a lot of peculiarities to its credit.
The department which had a rich galaxy of eminent professors in the past is now led by a vibrant team of 8 young faculty members, each competing and cooperating with each other to make the department scale greater heights.  We are also blessed to have the patronage of our retired faculty members in all our endeavours. We have received two scholarships for our students from our retired faculty members, as a testament of their trust and love to their department.
Presently, 3 faculty members have been awarded Ph. D in the department and our long cherished dream of a research centre is likely to materialize very soon. We also broke new grounds with our professional partnership with International Skills Development Corporation, UK to offer ACCA qualification to our B. Com students. The faculty members are constantly striving to upgrade themselves to give their best to the students. And we do hope that our students would regard their department fondly as their perennial source of positivity at any point of their lives. We are there for them always.
