Postgraduate Department of Botany

The Department of Botany at Mar Athanasius College (Autonomous), Kothamangalam, was established in 1965 as an undergraduate department. It was elevated to a Postgraduate Department in 2014 and further recognized as a Research Centre in Botany in 2025. The department is committed to providing high-quality, skill-oriented education in plant sciences. It currently offers B.Sc. (Honours) in Botany with Plant Biotechnology as a specialization, M.Sc. Botany with Plant Biotechnology as an elective, and Ph.D. Programme in Botany
In addition to well-equipped undergraduate and postgraduate laboratories, the department houses a modern Phytochemistry Laboratory to support advanced research. The laboratory infrastructure has also been strengthened under the Star College Scheme of the Department of Biotechnology, Government of India.

To become a centre of quality education and research in Botany, providing a platform for academic interactions in plant science.

HOD’s Desk

It is my pleasure and privilege to welcome you to the Postgraduate and Research Department of Botany. Since its inception in 1965, the department has grown steadily, attaining postgraduate status in 2014 and recognition as a research centre in 2025. Over the years, it has nurtured many distinguished alumni who have excelled in diverse fields.
Our primary objective is to impart quality education in plant sciences while fostering a strong inclination towards applied research among students. Botany, as a discipline, offers immense diversity and flexibility, enabling students to pursue specializations aligned with their interests and aptitudes. In today’s “bio-era,” the scope of Botany is vast and ever-expanding. From studying the physiological and molecular aspects of microscopic organisms to towering trees, from exploring ecosystems and biodiversity to understanding natural resources, pollution, and environmental sustainability, the field equips students with knowledge essential for addressing global challenges.
The college provides excellent infrastructure, well-equipped laboratories, and rich library resources. Under the guidance of our dedicated and experienced faculty, we strive to mould our students into competent professionals and responsible citizens with strong environmental and social consciousness.
