Department of Zoology
The department of Zoology started functioning in 1955 with undergraduate course in Zoology. Zoology is the science that deals with the study of living organisms, specifically animals and is a very broad and exciting subject that has much relevance to the world today. Zoologists study multiple species in a certain ecosystem, population interactions, and specific species or behaviours. They collect and analyse data in labs or outdoor environments. A major in Zoology will introduce you to the fascinating diversity of animals, their interactions with each other and their environments. You will develop an understanding of the forces that have shaped animal groups into highly structured ecosystems and communities. The department offers the undergraduate course in Zoology with Chemistry and Botany as subsidiary subjects. All the members of the faculty are Ph.D. holders and two of them are recognised research guides in Zoology.
The department maintains a museum with a number of preserved organisms belonging to all phyla of the animal kingdom. Four well maintained aquaria are kept in the laboratory with varieties of ornamental fishes.
