HOD’s Desk

"Literature is where I go to explore the highest and lowest places in human society and in the human spirit, where I hope to find not absolute truth but the truth of the tale, of the imagination and of the heart." - Salman Rushdie
The curriculum offered by the Department provides opportunities for the holistic development of the students. The aim of providing English as a Common Course to all first and second year graduate students of the College is to improve the language performance and communication skills of the students. Students of every discipline get a chance to have a glimpse of great literary writings and thereby enrich their understanding of human beings, society, and ecology. The Department gives special emphasis to provide advanced training in listening, speaking, reading, and writing skills. The Language Lab caters to the diverse linguistic requirements of the student body in a dynamic and student-centred manner. English as a Core Course provides insight and awareness into the different genres of English literature, introduces the master writers, and assists in developing a critical perspective by introducing a variety of literary theories. We have a well-furnished library which provides books on literary theory and literature and is easily accessible to the students.
The Department has an accomplished and dedicated faculty involved in active research and teaching. 50% of the faculty have Ph. D and the remaining is pursuing their doctoral degree. The faculty has received funding for Major and Minor research projects from national funding agencies like RUSA and UGC. The areas of research include Ecocriticism, Theatre Studies, Postcolonial Studies, Oriental Studies, Media Studies, Cultural Studies, Gender Studies, Children’s Literature, Narratology and Folklore Studies. Students are also encouraged to present papers in both national and international seminars and conferences. The Department also provides opportunities to develop the artistic and literary talents of the students by regularly conducting seminars, literary and arts competitions. The Department inspires inter-disciplinary and intra-disciplinary insights among faculty and students alike.
