Profile

Sanu Mathew Simon was inspired to work in the field of material science by the increasing demand for new materials for promising applications. As behavior of material continues to evolve with random tests and applications that in turn create new products to make our lives more convenient, he understood the scope and excitement of the domain. Furthermore, the development of hybrid nanostructure based coatings can be possibly demonstrated for various applications, inspiring him to do his Ph. D on the topic “Investigations on Polymer Modified TiO2-ZrO2 Coatings for Multifunctional Applications” and submitted my Ph.D. in October 2020. His dissertation work is in Physics (Material Science) under the joint mentorship of Dr. Cyriac Joseph (Associate Professor, SPAP, Mahatma Gandhi University) and Dr. N V Unnikrishnan (Visiting Professor, SPAP, Mahatma Gandhi University) at School of Pure and Applied Physics, Mahatma Gandhi University, Kottayam.

Research

My research work was focused on the development of TiO2-ZrO2 coatings for electrodes for self-cleaning, sensing via Surface Enhanced Raman Scattering, and supercapacitor applications. Developing thick coating of hierarchically porous double templated metal oxide coatings with excellent self-cleaning properties and high transmittance for the first time on glass substrates using simple dip coating technique will be focussed. Besides, development of TiO2-ZrO2 microsphere coatings using electrospraying technique with excellent and durable self-cleaning, antibacterial and photocatalytic functionalities is also to be carried out. Electrical double layer capacitive behavior of Ag decorated TiO2-ZrO2 coatings will be developed for the usage of the resultant material for energy storage especially as electrode for supercapacitors. Lastly, the development of substrates for Surface Enhanced Raman Scattering (SERS) successfully via layer-by-layer deposition of silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) conjugated with reduced graphene oxide (rGO) over TiO2-ZrO2 films shown that the coatings which can be used for SERS based sensing applications especially in areas of food safety, medicine and biotechnology is also on the prime focus.
